Family and Systemic Constellations
Family Constellations allows us to open the pathways to receiving the love, guidance and support that is abundantly available when the blocks to love dissolve through acceptance. In this powerful experiential workshop, participants will have the opportunity to gain insight and clarity into the hidden patterns and entanglements that disrupt the flow of love in their lives. By bringing the system into balance, we restore the flow of love to our own lives, allowing joy, creativity and centered connection to flourish.
How it Works:
Developed originally by Bert Hellinger, a German psychotherapist and former Catholic priest who lived amongst the Zulus of South Africa, Family Constellations offers a phenomenological approach to revealing the hidden dynamics underneath stress and suffering that show up in individual’s lives. As a dilemma is approached through constellations work, the client has the opportunity to witness, “what is” beyond the stories and preconceived notions that are held. Based in the field of love, the reality of a given situation is usually much kinder and more filled with love than the client’s day-to-day perception. By accepting “what is” a doorway of grace opens, with an invitation to live more fully from the heart, in touch with the deeper soul’s wisdom.
Family Constellations can be set up in individual sessions or within a group setting. Working individually, I either set up objects as representatives for the aspects of the constellation or will work with the client through guided meditation.
Group Constellations
In a group setting, I work with a client and conduct a brief interview to clarify the client’s issue. I often ask factual questions in order to establish what needs to be represented within the constellation. I steer away from asking leading, emotional questions, as the goal in the work is to allow the hidden, unseen dynamics to be revealed through the representatives.
With the completion of the interview, I will likely ask the client to set up specific named and un-named representatives from within the group of people gathered. Every aspect of the constellation work is voluntary. A group member is welcome to accept or decline the invitation to be a representative. Once the initial set-up is in place, the client sits to witness the unfolding of the constellation.
Representatives move into the circle and connect with what Dr. Albrecht Mahr calls, the “knowing field.” Having given permission to stand in, the representatives are able to feel into what they are representing while remaining entirely in contact with their own identity simultaneously. This is the phenomenological aspect of the work.
I check in with the representatives and asks questions such as, “How are you feeling for yourself?” and “How are you feeling for the other?” Representatives simply report their experience, such as “I am feeling hot” or “I feel tired.” When asked, “How do you feel towards another?” he or she might answer, “I feel connected to this one.” It is not important for the representative to know anything about the client’s life, or even to know what he or she is representing.
Often times, a person who is asked to stand in as a representative, will find a resonance from the constellation in his or her own life.
Representatives, with the facilitator’s guidance and support, are encouraged to report their experience and follow their inner knowing. Family Constellations allows for a connection with the heart’s longing. In the constellations, there is often a movement, or impulse at a deep level for accepting “what is”. From this place of acceptance comes the possibility of reconciliation.
As the constellation unfolds, members of the group who are simply witnessing, help to hold the container for the work. Being a witness is a powerful experience and group members are often touched with a relevancy in their own lives with what shows up in the “knowing field.”
Private Constellations
Family Constellations can be done one-on-one as well as in a group setting. In a private session, I use the same technique as in a group setting, beginning with an interview and then deciding what needs to be represented. In a private session, I provide objects for the representatives and we work together to find the right placement for the representatives and intuit the underlying tensions that come up to be seen and resolved. As the movement of the soul takes place, the objects are shifted to clarify the healing as it takes place.
Private sessions are very powerful and provide an element of privacy to your personal or professional clearing. Some people prefer to start with a private session, to get a sense of the work and before going into a group setting. For people who have a high profile in the community or for those who would like more clarity in a professional or business setting, a private session can provide all of the benefits as a group setting within a private setting. After participating in a group session, you may also choose to do a private follow-up with a specific emphasis on personal healing. Private sessions ensure setting up your own constellation, as well, which isn’t always possible in a group setting, due to time constraints.
